Overland Budget Tour to Dzanga Sangha from Congo Brazzaville

It is possible to go to Dzanga Sangha National park (Central African Republic) coming from the Republic of Congo. This is a good way to see the countryside in Congo-Brazzaville or is also ideal for those who are on a tour in Congo and would like to go on safari in Dzanga Sangha National Park. It is possible to combine your travel to Dzanga Sangha National Park with a safari in Odzala National Park or another destination in Congo-Brazzaville such as the Mayombe Forest or a trip on the Congo River.

Your tour will start in the capital of the Republic of Congo: Brazzaville from where we will take a comfortable coach early in the morning and we will arrive in Ouesso in the late evening. In Ouesso we need to take a buffer day in case the coach is late in order to not miss the boat transfer from Ouesso to Bayanga. You can have a free day in Ouesso or we can go to visit the town of Pokola. On the third day we will take the boat all the way to Bayanga, from where you will be brought by car to the lodge.

In Dzanga Sangha you will stay for a total of 4 nights and do gorilla tracking, watch the wildlife such as forest elephants at Dzanga Bai from the platform and go on mangabey tracking.

Dzanga Sangha is a magnificent park of extreme beauty in the south of Central African Republic and just over the border of Congo-Brazzaville and Cameroon. It has a high density of wildlife, especially primates and forest elephants are abundant. The park is also home to the Ba’ka tribe. The park is managed by WWF together with the government of the Central African Republic. Most people come here to go look for mammals such as bats, squirrels, pottos, galagos, but also red river hogs, bongos, forest buffaloes, pangolins, sitatungas, gorillas, mangabeys, de brazza monkeys and others. Dzanga Sangha is an ideal destination for gorilla tracking and has three groups of habituated gorillas. There is a platform constructed near Dzanga Bai where you can see up to 200 forest elephants coming and going to the bai, accompanied by buffaloes, bongos and huge flocks of African Grey parrots. It’s also a great destination if you just want to have a few days in a relaxing, green environment, while enjoying the sounds of the forest and the view of the Sangha River.

Please know that this expedition includes a lot of walking through dense rainforest. You don’t have to be an experienced hiker, but know that sometimes we do need to walk for a few hours, take off our shoes to go through a shallow stream and that you will have to be on your guard to not trip. During your travel you will encounter wildlife and have unique experiences such as gorilla tracking or seeing buffaloes and elephants. Know that wild animals are unpredictable and you have to take precautions and behave in a responsible way.

It is VERY IMPORTANT to add at least one buffer day before your travel in case your flight is delayed and also add at least one buffer day after the safari so you definitely not miss your flight back. We are not responsible for you missing any transfer flights due to bad planning.

Below is a proposed itinerary:

Day 1: Brazzaville – Ouesso

Today you take a coach from Brazzaville to Ouesso together with our handler. Overnight in Ouesso

Day 2: Free day in Ouesso

Free day in Ouesso. Optional tour in Pokola.

Day 3: Ouesso – Bayanga

Today will be a long day on your boat to Bayanga, after which you will be brought to Doli Lodge.

Day 4: Gorilla Tracking

Gorilla tracking of a group of habituated western lowland gorillas in Bai Hokou. The duration depends on how long we’ll have to walk to find the gorillas. We typically spend around one hour around them. You are obliged to be vaccinated against covid and you will have to take a rapid antigen test before going on this tour.

Day 5: Dzanga Bai

Dzanga Bai is a large clearance in the middle of the forest and the soil is rich in minerals. It attracts 50 tot 150 elephants who visit the bai each day. We can also observe bongo, giant forest hog, red river hog, sitatunga, forest buffaloes and even gorillas who come to the edge of the bai. We will spend the day on the platform giving you enough opportunity for wildlife viewing and photography.

Day 6: Agile Mangabey Tracking and night walk

We will spend more time in the park in search of more mammals and we will also visit a group of habituated agil mangabeys with over 150 members.

Day 7: Ba’aka Net hunting

We will go out with a group of Ba’aka net hunters, which is a really fascinating experience in the middle of the forest. It is very overwhelming to be in the middle of their calls and see them flashing around you while on the hunt for animals such as duikers.

Day 8: River exploration

We will go on a boat on the Sangha river in a dug-out canoe (max 3 people) after which we will get to know everything about palm wine extraction.
