Goliath Tigerfish Fishing: Bangui and Congo-Kinshasa

We are excited to help you with your quest for the Goliath Tigerfish aka the monster of the Congo River and the Ubangi River, called Mbenga by the locals. Some of the fishermen are even calling the tiger fish an evil spirit as it has been known to attack people. With its ugly mouth full of sharp teeth it definitely gives a scare when you coincidentally cross it!

There are several places in Congo, Central African Republic and Zambia where you can find the tiger fish, but the most sought after ones are the ones in the mighty Congo River and parts of the Ubangi River as they’re the biggest and meanest of them all. They can easily get to 1.5 m long and weigh 50 kg. There are even recorded cases of tigers up to 70 kg. Just to give you an idea, most of the tiger fish in the waters outside these rivers are 10 kg on average. Don’t be mistaken, these monsters don’t joke around and won’t let them be caught easily, so be prepared! We ask you to bring your proper gear as good fishing material is hard to find here.

Our tour starts in Bangui, we’ll bring you to our secret fishing spot in a comfortable speedboat. We’ll be on the Oubangi River for a week, where we will camp and eat simple local meals and will be grilling also the catch of the day. In the night we will enjoy a campfire under the stars of the rainforest. We will then go back to Bangui and take the plane to Kinshasa, most likely through Kigali. From Kinshasa we’ll pick you up by boat and bring you to our secret location on a private island in the Congo River.

This is where explorers such as Stanley went to discover the heart of darkness. You’ll have an impressive view on the river and at the beginning of your journey you’ll see the skylines of both Brazzaville and Kinshasa, which are the closest capitals in the world. Civilisation will disappear quickly though and soon you’ll be passing by small villages and greeted by fishermen in dug out canoes. You’ll be accompanied by an experienced Belgian fisherman whose family has been around for many generations. Together with the rest of the staff the local crew will make sure you’ll have an unforgettable adventure. During your trip you’ll be staying in a nice, clean bungalow with electricity and air conditioning and even hot running water. This is quite exceptional given the location and we’re proud to be the only tour company offering goliath tigerfish fishing in style in the whole country. You’ll be staying for a total of three nights and four days in which we’ll look for goliath tigerfish.

After your epic adventure we’ll get you back to the capital to take a PCR-test if that’s still around, after which you’ll have the chance to have a good rest at your hotel and a nice meal at one of the many restaurants around.
